Starting in October, Christmas is coming to town, as well in Uganda. You can see Christmas trees and flashing lights on Palms and garlands. For a short time one could forget that we are in a very poor Third World country, where poverty, high child mortality, unemployment and hopelessness are predominant.
The situation is similar in Friendship Village. Approx. 400 children are living here in poverty. Very often they only get one meal a day, sometimes not even this. Children with disabilities are particularly the ones who suffer most. That’s is why our Christmas wishes came true and we were more than happy that we were able to organize a Christmas party for the children through loving sponsors.
Despite the intense rainy season, Saturday, December 21st, 2019 showed itself from its most beautiful side. No cloud was to be seen at the African / blue sky. We were able to start decorating and cooking preparations early in the morning. The Program The program started at 11.30 am and the children were in time. They stormed the face painters and the inflated bouncing castle was tested before the official opening.
The Mukono office head Eva-Maria opened the special day with a prayer. Father Christmas was a surprise guest, who made himself available for an interview on the subject of the birth of Jesus Christ.
Some African and English carols completed the first part of the feast. The next item on the program was lunch. Hours before, nine hard working mothers had been busy preparing the meal so almost on time children could start eating. The menu consisted of rice, vegetable sauce, beef, cabbage and melon for dessert. Not to forget a bottle of juice for everyone.
After lunch, the kids had fun with the face painters, the bouncing castle, games and Christmas movies. The final part of the program included two dance performances from Eva’s children and a fashion show by the Village Junior School. Last but not least, for each child there was a surprise package prepared filled with a ball, biscuits, popcorn and sweets, which was very much appreciated by the children.
